Oi everyone,
well I have to admit, I'm not famous for my expertise in movies. Normally I watch whatever comes my way, and I'm not one of those people who knows names of every actor and director, or quotes every classic scene. But I like a good movie, good script, and good scenography may make my head dizzy for a week. Good movies stay with me, and by "good" I mean those that resonates with something that is just silently boiling in my own heart or head.
Two recent ones that I've watched fell into this 'watched at the right time in my life' category, which is more than during the whole 2013. The first one "The Great Beauty" (La Grande Bellezza) by Paoplo Sorrentino reminded me of how sleepy I am in my life and put a thought into my head that I might be missing something big, something that fills the life with the great beauty. Also, after watching this, I was 5 minutes away from going back to Italian language courses, as the language and panoramic / interior views of Rome are characters on their own rights in this movie for sure. What I can tell you, it's not a minimalist movie, it's grand, it's luxurious, it's full and I could even say - it shoes Baroque of our times. I can firmly confirm that this was the best European movie I've seen in a while, and it makes me happy, that it won best foreign language film at the Oscars night. Take a look to it's trailer:
The second one was Her (2013) by Spike Jonze, and the main role is played by one of my favorite actors ever - Joaquin Phoenix, whose name is a recommendation itself. Soft vintage futurism is not one of those 'flying cars' thing, it's like watching a very near future, not something totally fantastic. Pink shades and vintage scenography during the whole movie just emphasizes what is not told out loud, the feeling of being so lost in this world full of illusions. Though while watching a film, it might feel like this is something about technology, and where it leads us, but actually, I guess this movie is much more about human relationships, and how frightening letting someone go or let someone new to enter your life is. Well, and of course, it won an Oscar for original screenplay, but I have to say, in my opinion, it should earn some 'how to express an idea between the lines' Oscar if there was one. Well, and for everyone, who is just looking for something beautiful to watch, I'll add: watch this, it's a beautiful (visually beautiful) movie. Trailer:
Well and the third one I'll add into this post is probably the most 'illustrationgraphic' of them all, and it's not even released yet! But I can't wait for it, honestly, I just keep watching different trailers and sneak-peeks of it. So the film is called "The Grand Budapest Hotel" (by Wes Anderson), and I won't even start listing the casting as it's just too much to take. But the scenography, costumes, colors, oh my, I can't wait for it any longer, so please join me if you go crazy seeing all these details in trailers, as much as I am:
