here is my newest editorial illustration for Smithsonian Magazine on how 2D printing (and copying) created an explosion of paper industry because people used it in ways no one could predict in advance, and now, 3D printing technology is also entering the same unplanned phase.

There is nothing better than a proper conceptual scientific assignment. Loved to work with people from Stanford Medicine, hope to repeat the experience any time soon.

Big times! The Boston Globe!

Big news: Illustration for Josh Weil's "The Great Glass Sea" book review by John Freeman published in this Sunday's The Boston Globe. The book reveals tension between two brothers in the context of sci-fi post-soviet Russia, where they are hired to build gigantic mirrors above the lake to keep the fields owned by oligarch in constant light.

The Washington Post: Museums!

Yey!
This illustration of mine was just published in The Washington Post, Sunday issue, as a poster illustration for the special report on Museums. Illustration is based on an article 'On the prowl for memories, museum goers resort to snapshots' by Anne Midgette (http://wapo.st/1dZxPaB), focusing on interaction between a viewer and an art-piece through the smartphone as a filter, adding one more layer to the experience.

Illustrated Icons

Ok, so I don't do logos, icons or anything like that, so even illustrating these little things was far from a typical project for me. But after few stages of development and remaking a lot of stuff I'm pretty happy with the result and the whole experience with HERO Marketing Agency which was great for many reasons, including the fact that I've never had a client from San Francisco before, but mostly because of the people who work there, including but not limited to art director, account manager, project manager, invoice manager and everyone else in the office.

Big Times: The Washington Post

My biggest editorial illustration gig ever: Weekend (Going out Guide) cover for the Washington Post!

The over the top ice cream bowl illustration is based on things to do at the Potomac river region (full article 'Summer bucket list: 20 tips for a splendid season' available here).

My biggest thanks goes to Christopher Meighan, The Washington Post Deputy Design Director for Features for great art direction on the piece and endless patience with me. The next big thanks and massive compliments go to everyone involved into layout design so wonderfully designed around the illustration.

Pattern Studies: art prints

Hi all, just a short update on my pattern journey. You may have noticed a post on a Gourmet greeting cards some time ago on this blog, and I was contacted by few random people from different corners of the world who were asking me if they can get that sort of an art print. Well, I'm happy to announce that I finally found some time to make that happen with a bit adjusted scaling to make it look right as an art print, so here they are, framed, not framed or printed on canvas at my Society6 store, that ships worldwide. This kind of art prints are perfect for home (kitchen, entryway, bathroom, nursery, bedroom, or living room), office, meeting room, or other workplace, as well as public places, receptions, hotels or cozy small business, such as B&B or a cafe.

Also, matching cards (that may become a very cheap way to decorate your walls) are still available at my Etsy store in sets of 10 (of 1 sort) or a set of 12 (one of each). It worth's adding that memories are not just framed family pictures, it's also words and wishes on biggest occasions in life - and it doesn't make any sense to keep those sentiments hidden in a tin box under your bed. Hang those on your walls to remember good times everyday.

To conclude, I don't think this is the end for my pattern studies, as this is a little guilty pleasure next to my main editorial-corporate illustration priorities.

Editorial for NEW SCIENTIST magazine

Big news! Editorial assignment for NEW SCIENTIST magazine for a story that tracks progress in developing the mother of all sci-fi inventions: Programmable matter. It was a great opportunity to draw something structural and conceptual at the same time, and all I can say - it doesn't get better than this;
an opportunity to offer my own ideas and style with great art direction from Craig Mackie and Ryan Wills, great final spread design by magazines design staff, and a very interesting story to illustrate.

Spending Cuts. Big times.

What would you sacrifice?

Ladies&Gents, I'm presenting you my latest work - Spending Cuts series of 6 (all images available HERE) - vector drawings mixed with paper collages, a technique that I'm developing recently so I could work faster than when making paper cut-outs (that I still enjoy making though).

This was born in my head while listening to Morning Joe podcast on MSNBC and hearing 'budget cutes' 'spending cuts' 'everyone has to sacrifice' and etc all the time, and they drink coffee there as Starbucks is their 'brewer', so it all somehow mixed in my head as I thought on ways to save personal money, and those thoughts gave birth to this little series of 6.

So, what would you sacrifice? Coffee breaks maybe?
